Of Minecraft Madness & Fungal Floaters

Image
From the investigation logs of Nöx Grovzes 2022-09-13–2022-10-11 Leaving the were-ravens As we prepared to part company with the intrepid murder of were-ravens, they thanked us for cleansing what had been a defiled place, and re-iterated their invitation for any in our party to join their guild of shadow-hunting relic-keepers, and become were-ravens ourselves.  As the party turned to depart, I paused to inquire of any knowledge the stolid band of birdfolk may have regarding the rumors of a fungal plague sweeping the land. The were-ravens affirmed they had also heard the swirling rumors of fungal spreads with detrimental effects: of formerly-edible mushroom varieties now inducing sickness; of fungi exclusive to certain seasons and climes now blooming year-round; but, said they, no word or rumor of anything of the magickal or metaphysical sort. Though they confirmed their own observations aligned with the fungal zeitgeist. Back at CandleKeep Upon our return to CandleKeep and rendezvo...

Imp My Ride, part 1

On the road from Mehren to Vermeillon, our erstwhile adventurers were surprised and, ahem, amazed when they saw, on the road before them, a wizard appear from a golden smoking rune. Having never seen a real wizard before the team gasped in surprise and delight to have the opportunity to meet a creature of such power, and need I say charm.  He introduced himself as Amazz (pronounced just as you'd expect so that it rhymes with gaze, raise, and unfazed). Tybalt, noticing an authentic wizard, moved a little to the back of the party and Luocious was likely jealous of Amazz's svelte black and gold robes. Likely they all were.  Amazz offered the group 500 GP to accompany him and help with a time sensitive project -- he had 5 barrels of Goblin Blood Brew that he needed delivered from the town of Red Rock Hill to the city of Eastbound. He offered the team 250 gold right there, another 250 when they finished, and promised a surprise in between. The team driven by their lust for wealth ...

Wytchway to the woods?

Once the team has returned to Candlekeep our heroes meet with Miss Hollypocket who pays the team their gold, and introduces them the Janussi, Keeper of the Tomes and Archmage. Janussi asks them to tell her what happened with her books that had been attacking hapless scholars in her library, and Luocious, respecting the team's promise to not rat out the werejackals attempts to deceive Janussi by blaming the whole thing on rats. You'd think a rogue would be better at lying.  Anyhow... Janussi, bemused, skips past this mighty digression, and diverts the conversation to a business proposition. Apparently the team seems to have some skill with sleuthing books and mysteries, and if the team agrees to her proposition they can have a permanent place at Candlekeep as the Keeper's Hands. Seems she needs some foolish and / or brave enough to go "get stuff done."  The team agree and she shares with them a prophecy she is keeping secret: within a year a fungal apocalypse will ...

What went down at the bookstore

As the team enters The Wide they notice a few things:  The Wide seems to have a definite bougie vibe--there are definitely sections for the haves and other sections on the outskirts for the have-nots. Reggie is not stoked on this.  That Luocious can change shape as he does so in front of the characters to better interact and wheel and deal through the wide. Now Luocious looks like a rich human merchant. What else might Luocious be hiding?  Tybalt was not kidding about being nervous -- he won't even go into any shops and keeps furtively looking over his shoulder, hood up, beard up, and hunched down. He wouldn't even go to Wizards of the Wide  with Reggie (who went in and looked at tome of the uncommon, rare, and mythic rare magic scrolls they printed and sold from the stand.   Eventually the team finds Amberdune Books and talk to the booksellers there asking them about what kind of books exactly do they think they're selling. The two booksellers who ar...

Holy *&$%#@! That book bit me!

After returning to Candlekeep from Fistandia's Floating Castle, the team are tasked by Miss Hollypocket to investigate the library where strange and dangerous events have been occurring.  There Luocious finds  a tome titled Mazfroth's Mighty Digressions and learns a couple of things: mostly though he learns about who's who in The Abyss and what monsters each of these demon lords may have spawned. New names from the hell realms included: Baphomet, Demogorgon, Graz'zt, Orcus, Juiblex, along with a few others. However as Luocious was just getting into full research-mode, the book transforms into an ectoplasmic ball of purple power and attacks.  Eventually after Mazfroth's Mighty Digression Died and Disappeared, Miss Hollypocket showed up out of nowhere and tasks the team with finding the original -- it appears the book was donated to the library only a few weeks earlier and they should go investigate.  The team is slightly unnerved by how Miss Hollypocket can just...

The Joy of Extradimensional Spaces, or Beauty and the Mimic

Image
The team ventures through the glimmering doorway and step from Candlekeep into a mansion floating in an empty purple miasma. Within, they meet and greet a somewhat frazzled Matreous who is relieved to see the team as well as the book. He managed to open the portal to Fistandia's mansion after noticing the same command in the Joy of Extradimensional Spaces, but leaving the book behind like a dummy, he did not know the command word to reopen the portal when it closed behind him.  He's been searching around the mansion (Fistandia is not present and Matreous is curious) and shows the players a small statue of an imp that he believes has magical properties. He needs to go back to Candlekeep ("I can work better from the library"), but asks if the team would be interested in looting exploring the mansion while he keeps the portal open on the other end. The teams agrees, but when Matreous steps through the portal they hear him shriek and the portal closes before they can esc...

The team meets at Candlekeep (but first at a tavern)

Image
While traveling along the Sword Coast, Tybalt, Reginald, Luocious, Nox, and Gudetama decide to rest at the Dragon's Breath, a tavern known for it's cheap beer and food. Whilst each takes a break inside, pondering the adventures and decisions that led them here, a lad rushes into the tavern and asks for help--someone has died in their nearby village and he needs to find the scholar Matreous who will know what to do next; he asked for help from strangers, and our heroes strangely agreed. They're told Matreous has travelled to Candlekeep for magical studies, and are asked to find him there and bring him back. Each stalwart do-gooderis given an unusual book in order to gain entry to Candlekeep and the adventurers set out walking to the legendary fortress of knowledge.  Upon arrival, they are greeted by Avowed gatekeepers--acolytes working at Candlekeep--and are shown to a room where Matreous, a researcher of portals and dimensional magic, is staying and was last seen. The team ...
